Jewelry on the Oscars Red Carpet

Sandra BullockMost celebrities stuck to the usual fare of white diamonds and platinum for their Oscars jewelry, but onyx, colored diamonds, sapphires and emeralds made an appearance, too. The yellow gold that's been popular at other recent red carpet events was mostly absent at the Academy Awards.

Kate Winslet's platinum and yellow diamond pendant and bracelets, from Tiffany & Co., were among the colorful diamonds on the Oscars' red carpet, and Helen Mirren's classic Chopard necklace was most definitely a (125-carat) diamond stunner. Penelope Cruz wore Chopard, too, and her drop earrings were a favorite. Anna Kendrick's look was perfect, from her blush pink gown to her delicate diamond cuff bracelet and "matching" clutch.

Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock wore diamond and platinum bracelets (by Neil Lane) from her personal collection.

Best Oscars Jewelry of the Decade

Best Oscars Jewelry of the DecadeNicole Kidman's rope-like sautoir necklace is a personal favorite from the last decade of Oscars jewelry. Worn in 2008, the necklace is fashioned from 1400 carats of rough, faceted and polished diamonds. It's just one of the looks that defined jewelry trends at the Oscars during the first decade of the new century.

Diamonds and platinum are always top choices for Oscars attire, but jewelry trends have changed somewhat during the past ten years. Stacked cuffs and bracelets are more plentiful than ever, and so are colorful diamonds and other types of colored gems.

The Bachelor's Engagement Ring

Bachelor Engagement Ring"Bachelor" Jake Pavelka's (potential) bride-to-be, Vienna, is the girl who's wearing this stunning Neil Lane engagement ring. Diamonds are set into the ring's band and completely surround its 2.02 princess-cut focal stone (70 diamonds in all with a total weight of 2.72 carats). The ring was custom designed and signed by Mr. Lane, whose jewelry is ever-popular with celebrities.

Jewelry Trends at the NAACP Image Awards

Paula Patton NAACP Awards JewelryIt's been a very good season for celebrity jewelry, and I expect the positive style trends to continue to the Oscars and beyond. One recent favorite -- Paula Patton's yellow gold and garnet NAACP Image Awards jewelry. The designs were a good match for her Grecian-like gown, which flowed to the ground in waves. Diamond, platinum and onyx jewelry were all popular choices for the red carpet event.

Up Close with Celebrity Cocktail Rings

Cocktail rings remain popular, with no single style taking center stage. You'll see all sorts of designs in this celebrity gallery, from vivid and pastel single-stone versions to rings set with multiple gemstones. Domed and round rings, like the design Drew Barrymore is wearing, are hot, and their bulk works perfectly on an index finger.

Breeze through the gallery, and if you like what you see, jump on over to my Get the Look for Less Cocktail Ring Assortment, and steal the style.

Celebrity Jewelry Style at the BAFTA Awards

Anna Kendrick BAFTA Awards

BAFTA stands for British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and their annual awards ceremony is the equivalent of the Oscar presentations in the U.S. Claire Danes and Kate Winslet both wore Tiffany jewelry to this year's presentations. Anna Kendrick's long drop earrings were a personal favorite, with a fluid look created by a series of golden ovals flowing down a chain towards a large asymmetrical gemstone. Anna's Twilight series cast-mate, Kristen Stewart, kept her jewelry simple, but had a new accessory by night's end -- the Orange Rising Star Award.

Flip through the BAFTA photo gallery for a peek at some of the jewelry on the 2010 red carpet.

Which Precious Metal is Your Favorite?

Precious MetalsEveryone has a favorite precious metal, one we gravitate back to even if we wear something else occasionally. Do you choose a metal by its color or by its content? If you like white metals you have multiple choices. Three are sterling silver, white gold and platinum. If you like yellow metals you probably wear a lot of gold--it's a versatile metal and its color can be changed dramatically depending on the other metals that are added to it, like the ingredients that add the pink tones you see in vintage jewelry and in Black Hills Gold. There are other choices too, including titanium, which doesn't usually cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to other metals. Stainless steel isn't a precious metal, but we see it used in more jewelry lately. There's a metal to suit every taste and budget.

Are Olympic Gold Medals Really Made of Gold?

olympic gold medalsAre Olympic gold medals made of gold? Yes, but they haven't been solid gold for almost a century. The medals are designed by the Olympics Committee in each host city, but the designers have to follow a few minimum guidelines:

  • all medals must be at least 60mm in diameter and 3mm thick
  • gold and silver medals must be made from 92.5 percent silver
  • gold medals must be plated with at least six grams of gold.

Some medals for recent games have been larger. Like the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. The gold and silver medals awarded there were the heaviest ever created, measuring 85mm in diameter and 10mm thick and weighing in at 20 ounces.

We'll Miss You, Alexander

christine taylorI was saddened today when I heard that British fashion designer Alexander McQueen has died. His fashion shows were always events to follow, and not just for the fashions. Like "Everything And the Kitchen Sink," last year's show during Paris Fashion Week, where a pile of stuff was piled onto the runway. They were all props from past events, including a kitchen sink of course. Milliner Philip Treacy came up with some unusual "hats" for the show, blending them with the circus-like atmosphere that accompanied the theme. We'll miss you, Alexander.
